BRITNEY KING
Britney graduated with her Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Mexico. Originally operating as STEM, her participation with STEAM has been to add the "A" of Art. Her work with STEAM has involved curating a show at the Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC). A large part of her work with STEAM has been connecting students and youth with resources that will further potential future careers. She has addressed these needs for equal access to resources by organizing workshops around 3D laser printing. Her method of providing equal access of educational resources to low-income Latino and Native communities has involved creating mentorship opportunities. This has happened through educational partnerships with the Native American Community Academy (NACA) a connection she helped facilitate with STEAM.
As an AmeriCorps Vista, Britney took an oath to fight poverty in America. For her this happens most often through indirect service by promoting educational opportunities. By providing access to these resources, social equity increases within these communities in the hopes of curtailing life circumstances that could otherwise lead to poverty and social injustice. By catching high school students in their junior and senior years with workshops related to STEAM, chances increase that they will attend institutions of higher education and earn higher wages down the line. Work as an AmeriCorps Vista entails building capacity, in other words, creating the programs that other Vistas or volunteers can expand upon later. This is crucial in New Mexico where the creation of jobs is essential to a sustained economy. Not only does Britney's work create more jobs for future STEAM candidates but also trains future engineers, scientists, artists, etc within New Mexico. Her most recent project STAR-Maps connects the dots for creative minds through a constellation of resources in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos. Her words of advice for future Vista's is that your term of service is what you make it.
On November 18 2018, Britney ended her second term as VISTA with STEAM NM. Currently she works as an assistant instructor for the Deep Dive Digital Media Bootcamp at CNM STEMulus Center and as a teacher at FUSE Makerspace.
