Matthew Barbato, the Operations Tech at FUSE Makerspace, oversees workers and visitors to ensure education and safety. With a background in high-voltage electrical work and a degree in Music, he approaches the lab machinery as sensitive instruments. He describes his main objective as turning any scrap material into guitars lest he "melt." Since moving to New Mexico from New York three years ago, Matthew has had a hand in Albuquerque’s access to technological development by teaching 3D printing classes out of the STEMulus Center’s copy room. When the FUSE Makerspace became a thing in March of 2016, Matthew was there. He believes that, “if you make something, to you, it’s the greatest thing in the world.” At Fuse Makerspace, people can make their communities.
Currently, FUSE Makerspace is transitioning to a new site at 101 Broadway on the North West Corner of Broadway and Central Ave. Despite an average of twelve local businesses that utilize the facilities, Matthew hopes the centralized locale will help to further raise Burqueño awareness of the resources available. “No one knew it existed,” he muses in a way that inspires confidence in the new location. Matthew's superhero of choice would be Dr. Strange since being born without superpowers, he is self made.
